One may say that I'm pretty connected via social media/social networking. My excuse.. occupational hazard. Today was a more Offline day. Well, at least, more Offline than Online. So instead of my usual Facebook or Twitter fix, I was on my blackberry. I noticed the status update from a friend on my Blackberry Instant Messenger aka BBM (Blackberry phone application), which read "RIP Bill Cosby."
I immediately Googled "Bill Cosby" and went on Twitter to search for the famous comedian/fellow Temple University Alum. After some clicks and searches, I found out that it was a very very very UNCOOL RUMOR. This made me think of the power of Social Media. "Bill Cosby" is currently a trending topic on Twitter because of this rumor. My friend said that she heard about the news on Facebook. Although there many benefits to Social Media, we can never forget that it is based on the opinions & thoughts of the general population. All information must always be verified. Even if a company states on Twitter that they have the cure for every disease known to man, although it sounds great, it still needs to be verified before being taken as fact. When used correctly all roads should always lead back to an accurate source. If you are using Social Media for your brand or business then have all roads should lead back to your website so that people can hear from you directly. Ironically, Bill Cosby, has an AMAZING online brand. He is thoroughly connected and has been featured on Mashable (social media news website).
